kathirkamam kanthan | Kataragama Skanda and the Selvasannidhi Vel

Kataragama, situated on the banks of the Menik Ganga in the southern tip of Sri Lanka, is a holy land that transcends religious boundaries. Here, Lord Murugan (Skanda) graces devotees in both form and formless states. Surrounded by dense forests and hills, the atmosphere is electrified by the "Arohara" chants of devotees fulfilling their vows. Kataragama Skanda stands as a pinnacle of faith, and the fire-walking ceremony and the Esala Perahera held here are world-renowned. A unique feature of this temple is that the deity is worshipped not as a specific statue, but in the form of a mystic diagram (Yantra) kept behind a curtain.

The Connection between Kataragama and the Selvasannidhi Vel:

The spiritual influence of Kataragama extends all the way to Thondamanaru in the northern tip of the island. The Selvasannidhi Temple in Jaffna is revered as the "Kataragama of the North." Just as the power of the Lord is primarily worshipped through the 'Vel' (Spear) in Kataragama, the worship of the Vel is paramount at Selvasannidhi as well. It is believed that the Vel enshrined at Selvasannidhi holds a direct spiritual connection and carries the same divine vibrations as Kataragama. Because of this deep link, it remains a tradition for devotees undertaking the long foot pilgrimage (Pada Yatra) to Kataragama to first worship the Vel at Selvasannidhi and obtain permission before commencing their journey.

Much like Kataragama, which is a place where people gather without caste or religious discrimination, Selvasannidhi stands as a sanctuary of equality and is famous as a place of Annadanam (free offering of food). Elders believe that because the same sanctity present in Kataragama resides in the Selvasannidhi Vel, worshipping here grants the same merit as visiting the southern shrine.
