Declared as a part of wild life sanctuary by the department of wild life conservation in 1985, Beddagana Wetland Park is an 18 million rupees funded project. This wetland park is located in Sri Jayawardhanapura Kotte within the Sri Jayawardhanapura Kotte bird sanctuary and in close proximity to Diyavannawa Lake (From Colombo fort it is a 30 minutes drive to this park.)
The main purpose of creating this urban wetland is to strengthen flood control within the Colombo city limits. This wetland spans for 18 hectares and is housing varieties of flora and fauna. Meanwhile it works as an agent for flood control; it also attracts tourists for its scenic evergreen beauty. Furthermore this wetland park is an agent to control the hot temperature of the air within the area. It soothes the adjacent lands with fresh and purified air.Walking paths in this wetland are its major highlight. Maintenance activities are conducted by the urban development authority.
