Thondamanaru Selva Sanithy murugan Kovil jaffna

Located in the picturesque village of Thondaimanaru, approximately 20 kilometers north of Jaffna, stands the Selva Sannithy Murugan Kovil. It is one of the most revered and spiritually significant temples in Northern Sri Lanka, dedicated to Lord Murugan.

Unlike the towering gopurams and elaborate Vedic rituals found in many other major Hindu temples, Selva Sannithy is celebrated for its humility and simplicity. It is often referred to as the "Chella Kathirgamam" (Little Kataragama) of the North, sharing a spiritual lineage with the famous Kataragama temple in the South.

Unique Worship and Annadanam What sets this temple apart is its unique form of worship. The rituals here are not performed according to the strict Agamic scriptures used elsewhere. Instead, the poojas are conducted in silence, with the priests covering their mouths to ensure purity and total devotion.

However, the temple’s most defining characteristic is its title as "Annadana Kandan" (The Lord who feeds). The temple is famous for its daily Annadanam (free food charity), where thousands of devotees are fed regardless of caste, creed, or status. It is believed that eating a meal here cures physical and mental ailments.

The Setting The temple is situated along the tranquil banks of the Thondaimanaru lagoon (a canal that connects the lagoon to the Indian Ocean). The calm waters and the cool breeze create a deeply meditative atmosphere. During the annual festival, the air is filled with piety as devotees perform penance, rolling on the hot sands or carrying Kavadis to fulfill their vows.

For the people of Jaffna, Selva Sannithy is not just a place of worship; it is a home of healing. It stands as a timeless testament to faith, equality, and the grace of Lord Murugan.
