The highest mountain of the North Central Province, Ritigala is stationed nearly 198 – 200 km North East of capital city, Colombo. Ritigala comes under the “cultural triangle” area and lies in-between the heritage cities Anuradhapura and Polannaruwa.

The history of legendary site Ritigala dates back to the 1st century. The name express as Riti – pole (mentions the tall trees exist in the mountain range) or Pali word arita, which means safety and gala – rock in Sinhala. Also the mountain was mentioned in Ramayana story and in the Sri Lankan legendary note Mahavamsa. In both, the mountain was mentioned as a protective place.

Ritigala is embedded with rich herbals and ruins such as early day monastery, reservoirs and its bunds, double plat forms and many more. Along the mountain a clear path is available which was used to climb up for meditation by the early monks. The ruins of the Ritigala express the mastery artistic talent of the early days.

Climbing up the mountain and feeling the cool breeze will surely give a peaceful mindset to every one without any doubt.
