Thanthirimale Rajamaha Vihara

Thanthirimale is a village located in the Anuradhapura District and this village housed historically sacred thanthirimale raja maha vihraya. The holy premises Thanthirimale raja maha viharaya is situated nearly 44 km far from the Anuradhapura city, to its North – West direction.

It is believed that the village exist from the 3rd century B.C with the name Thivakka Bamunugama. With the down fall of Anuradhapura kingdom the places around Thanthirimale Raja maha viharaya also lost their impotence. But in 1960’s Kudakongaskada Wmalagnana thero pioneered in renovating the viharaya. Viharaya consist of many attractions such as Samadhi Buddha statue of 8ft height, pond, ancient inscriptions, sleeping Buddha statue carved on stone and cave paintings of age (nearly) 4000 years. It is believed that a sapling of Sri Maha Bodhiya is located at the top of a rock which exists in the premises of Thanthirmale Raja maha viharaya. Still it’s a miracle for the tourist how the Bodhi sapling was grown well in the hard rock and less watery sand.

Mostly pilgrims used to visit the viharaya but also many tourists from local and foreign used to visit. The fables and peaceful environment which centres the Thanthiri Raja maha viharaya can’t be forgotten by the visitors.
