
St. Mary’s church of Jaffna is located in the main city of Jaffna District, Northern Province. It’s very near to reach from A9 highway.
The St. Mary’s cathedral is owed to the Roman Catholic mission and the St. Mary’s church is the cathedral church of the Jaffna diocese. The church is the head of all churches in the Jaffna diocese. As the name refers, it’s mainly dedicated to ‘our lady of concencio’. The St. Mary’s cathedral is the more spacious and large cathedral when compare to the rest cathedrals of the Island. During the colonial era the church was made using clay and in 1789 foundation for a stone building was laid. The foundation for the present church was laid on 1938 only. The church underwent for many changes for every reconstructions and renewals. During the Silver Jubilee year (2007) of the cathedral, a Blessed Sacrament chapel was built and opened for the public worship.
Many visit the church especially for its architectural design and admiring size. The visitors can make a quick visit to the nearby official resident of Bishop to meet the priests.
