
The St. Lucia's cathedral church is located in the Colombo District, Kotahena. Kotahena [Colombo 13] is home for many famous places of worship.
The church is allocated to St. Lucy and home for the archbishop of Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Colombo city. The church is exactly copied the architectural style of St. Peter’s Basilica church in the Vatican. The church has a capacity to accommodate 6000 people in its nave (central part of the church). Originally the church was built in 1760 as a small hut under Dutch period. The present structure was completed only in 1902. The St. Lucia’s cathedral is considered as the oldest and larger parish cathedral of the country. Feast of St. Lucy is celebrated every December 13th and she was considered as the protector against eye trouble. The front part was decorated with seven statues and the church consists of many architectural statues. The unique statue of Our Lady of Kotahena is more special in it.
