Matara District

Matara district is positioned in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. As the district is located along the Southern coast, the serene view of the beaches attracts more tourists. Matara district is famous from the ancient time as “Ruhunu”, one of the three kingdoms and as main commercial port during the reign of Dutch & Portuguese. The main source of income for the district is based on paddy cultivation, tea & spices plantation. The fort and other remaining architecture of the district value the old architectural skill. Sinhalese and Buddhism hold the majority while Moors and Islam holds the second major percentage among the population of the District.
