One of the dishes that Sri Lankans frequently prepare is dhal curry. Dhal is a grain which is imported from India. Dhal has become one of the main dishes that is served along with many main meals such as rice, bread and string hoppers. Almost every Sri Lankan knows the taste of this dish. Whether it is breakfast, lunch or dinner this is the ideal dish to serve. Washed dhal, chili powder, turmeric powder, curry powder, chopped onion, green chilies, garlic, salt are the ingredients needed to prepare this dish. Preparation follows very few methods.
Washed dhal and above all mentioned ingredients except salt are put into the cooking pot. Some water is added to cook the dhal. Once dhal is cooked with water, then coconut milk could be added to make it tastier. Soon before the curry is taken away from hearth salt is added to taste. If it is added at first dhal does not get cooked well. Fraying the dhal curry with small amount of oil, mustard seeds and dried chilies is another method to serve the dish. Sometimes spinach leaves are also added in preparing the dish to make it nutritious and colorful.
