Hikkaduwa is on the south coast of SriLanka to be found in the Southern Province, about 17 km north west of Galle and 98 km south of Colombo. The name Hikkaduwa is thought to have been came from the two words Ship Kaduwa, with Ship being the shorter description of Shilpaya which refers to knowledge in Sinhalese and Kaduwa which means sword.
Hikkaduwa beach reputed as the second greatest surfing spot in Sri Lanka. The sea currents straight in front of the beach house can be very strong and make swimming quite risky at times. Parents with children should be mainly mindful of this. Better to just have a paddle or sit back and get pleasure from the impressive crashing waves at the beach house instead and, if you want to go swimming in the sea, take a journey to the Coral Sanctuary at Hikkaduwa or go down the beach to Unawatuna instead.
