An area of more than 30 square kilometres in the Gampaha District was occupied by a water body and it’s referred as Negombo lagoon. Negombo is nearly 28 to 33 km north to the main city, Colombo and somewhat near to the Katunayake International Airport.Negombo town is traditionally based on fishing industry and the economy mainly depends on tourism. Dandugam Oya, Old Dutch Canal and many other small water sources fed the lagoon and the outflow of the lagoon linked to Indian Ocean by a narrow canal. Negombo lagoon was considered as the most important venue during the colonial era by Portuguese, Dutch and British because of its importance for the transportation and administration. The lagoon extends for nearly 12km long and 2m depth. The lagoon is rich in both eco systems, terrestrial and aquatic. According to Directory of Asian Wetlands, Negombo lagoon is listed as one of the major wetlands of Sri Lanka. As a good tourist spot of Negombo town, the lagoon welcomes tourists from all over. Old Dutch fort gate, Dutch cannel and Old colonial era churches are the other spots near to the lagoon.

One of the developed fishery area in the Southern coastal zone of Sri Lanka is known as Tangalle. The busy town, Tangalle is nearly 195km from island capital city, Colombo and situated in 
Hambantota District. According to internal legends, the name Tangalle reflects the meaning of projecting rock in Sinhala. It means, the Tangalle town area was protected by a lengthy rock from sea. That lengthy rock was projected out from the sea across the bay gate.
Tangalle beach which stretches along the southern coastal for about 10km. A good sandy coastal shore is available for the visitors with the natural scenic view. The one who visit the beach can easily get mingle with the coastal environment. The huts around the beach and the rich bio diversity among the beach treat the tourist with what they want. Worshipping adorable sun rise and other common beach activities are available here also.
Coral reefs, diversity of fishes, sea turtle hatching, diving in the sea, swimming, sun bath and beach huts which resembles the Dutch period are famous in Tangalle beach. The beach is calm and favourable mostly but sometimes in summer season that is from April to October, it seems to be rough.
Blowhole at Kudawella, the 2nd largest blowhole in world and which is nearly half an hour drive from Tangalle, turtle conservation area, some ancient Buddhist temples and statues, Medaketiya beach and Medilla beach are some other main tourist attraction spots around Tangalle. It is clear enough that Tangalle beach is a natural treasure of the Southern coastal area.

For some decades the beach and the surroundings considered as a high security zone and played a major role during the war times. At present restrictions loosed and allow the public to visit the beach. But only a apart is accessible by the public. The rest area, which is under the control of Sri Lankan air force, is maintained with resorts.Marble beach is enough good for swimming, boat riding, water sports, nature admiring, photography and many more. Can visit any time but during year end, beach is much busy with tourists. Diamond hill and a little forest nearby are adding more value to the beach. The unique species of flora and fauna are available in the forest. If anyone likes to admire the beauty of nature for more, just hike on the Diamond hill. Beach Mount-Laviniya is located throughout the length of the Southern coastal belt and 10km apart from capital city of the Island, Colombo. There are many world class and ordinary hotels and resorts available around the beach to taste the sea food. Mount Laviniya beach is more favourable holiday spot for a memorable Christmas night. Late British Governor’s home which was built as a monument for his girl appear in the Mount Laviniya Hotel.
Being careless and alone along the shore is somewhat danger in this beach. Mount Laviniya beach serves everyone those who visit, to relax well.
